Gold
Eagle coins have been minted in the United States since 1986. Since
their inception they have been sold in proof and bullion editions and
have been highly cherished by investors and collectors alike. The
proof coins are created specifically for investors and are sold sealed
in a protective plastic case. Gold Eagles are manufactured and
sold in 4 demoniations. The one ounce Gold Eagle has a face value
of $50.00, the one half ounce Gold Eagle has a face value of $25.00,
the quarter ounce Eagle has a value of $10.00 and the one-thenth ounce
eagle has a face value of $5.00. By law the gold contained in
the coins must come from the United States. Gold Eagles minted
1986-1991 are dated with Roman numerals. In 1992, the U.S. Mint switched
to Arabic numbers for dating Gold Eagles. The
1/10, 1/4, and 1/2 troy oz coins are identical in design to the 1 troy
oz coin except for the
markings on the reverse side that indicate
the weight and face value of the coin (for example, 1 OZ. FINE GOLD—50
DOLLARS). As is often the case with bullion coins, the face values of
these coins ($5, $10, $25 and $50; reflecting the fact that the coins
are legal tender are mostly symbolic and do not reflect their true
value. Many
investors and collectors can ease into the market by purchasing the smaller
weight coins. |
