Investing in gold mining stocks are an attractive way to play the gold market.

Investing your money in gold mining stocks as well as in physical gold is a great way to diversify your precious metals portfolio.  Gold has a history of being a hedge against inflation and an attractive investment when the value of the U.S. dollar drops.  That is the environment we find ourselves in now and smart investors are looking to gold to protect and grow their assets.  Gold mining companies can be stable entities or highly speculative investment propositions.  Gold mining companies with proven reserves and successful mining operations are of course the most stable investment vehicles for those looking to play the gold market.  In large part, companies with proven gold reserves have that fact already priced into their share price.  For those who can stand a bit more risk (maybe that is anathema to true gold investors) you might consider a speculative venture that is in the exploration stage.  They may have several properties that could potentially yield gold.  Sometimes these early stage companies will sell the rights to a larger company with the experience and financial stability to actually mine the gold.  Be wary of newly formed gold ventures that spend a disproportionate amount of their budget in marketing - look for gold companies that are actively exploring and researching those will offer the best chance for a quick gain.  Proven gold mining companies with large reserves may also have short life spans if they are not re-investing a portion of their gold mining profits into research and exploration of new mining opportunities.  The bottom line in investing in gold mining stocks is to do very solid research.  The big established gold mining stocks are stable and will offer less upside than the smaller plays who look to grow with exploration.
