Since the first coin was minted, people have been collecting them. As a hobby, coin collecting is extremely popular and collections can be general in scope, with a little of everything, or very focused -concentrating only on dimes. Most coin collectors consider the condition of the coin to be the most important factor. Most serious collectors deal with graded coins, coins that have been certified to be of a particular condition by a coin grading service. Grading the condition of a coin is as much art as science, and experts will disagree often about what condition a particular coin may be. For a coin to be valuable and of investment grade, it not only has to be in good condition it of course has to be rare. As with most everything, supply and demand are the ultimate judges of what something is worth. Collecting rare coins can be a fascinating hobby. Owning a coin minted hundreds of years ago gives you a tangible link to that point in history. Knowing that your coin was used and handled during an historically important era can give special meaning to your collection above and beyond its monetary value. The market for rare coins can fluctuate like any other market and knowing when to buy and sell is important. Keeping abreast of what is happening through newsgroups, magazines, and trade shows can be of great help. |
