Silver Eagle coins have been minted in the United States since 1986. Since their inception they have been sold in proof and bullion editions and have been highly cherished by investors and collectors alike. The proof coins are created specifically for investors and are sold sealed in a protective plastic case. The face denomination of the silver eagle is one dollar and is guaranteed to contain .999 ounces of silver. The design on the obverse has been borrowed from the "Walking Liberty" design by Adolph A. Weinman, which was originally used on the United States' half-dollar coin from 1916 to 1947. This was probably the public's favorite design on any United States silver coin; hence the choice of this design for the Silver Eagle. The reverse portrays a heraldic eagle and was designed by John Mercanti. American Silver Eagle coins can be bought individually or in a tube containing 20 coins. For the serious investor a "green monster" can be bought which is a box containing 25 tubes, or a total of 1000 American Eagle coins. Silver Eagle coins have fast become the most popular way in which to obtain physical silver. The fact that they are produced by the United States mint insures their quality and content and they are recognized around the world as a premier silver coin. |
