Investing in the silver market can be accomplished in several ways, the main three methods are through the purchase of silver coins, silver bullion or by investing in silver mining stocks.  Silver, as we all know, is a precious metal, but aside from its beauty and use in coins or jewelry, silver has become a very important metal for industry and technology.  Most people would be surprised to know that over the last 15 years, the annual production of silver (mined and made available for use) has been less than its consumption (used in industry, or for coins and jewelry).  Among all metals, silver is the best conductor of electricity and its use in electrical components has increased dramatically.  As an investor, it is easy to see that the demand for silver will increase but the supply of silver is lagging.  Investing in physical silver can be difficult.  Given the relatively low price of silver, it can be difficult to store and protect thousands of ounces.  Other investment options are to buy stock in silver mining companies, or owning silver certificates.  A silver certificate allows an investor to buy and sell physical silver without having to store or transport it.  Many Swiss banks allow investors to buy silver as they would a currency, and there are now several options for investing in silver through the exchanges and stock markets.  The i-shares silver trust is an EFT (exchange Traded Fund) that allows investors to buy and sell silver through the New York Stock exchange just as they would with any other stock.  These new silver investing mechanisms offer an easy way in and out of the silver market without having to take possession of a large amount bullion or coins.  However, part of the reason many people invest in precious metals is to protect against the remote possibility of a market or government collapse, so having some physical metal is still an attracticve option.
