Silver mining stocks offer an investor interested in silver a chance to speculate in the precious metals market without having to worry about hoarding and protecting a physical stockpile of silver coins or silver bullion. There are several publicly traded silver stocks whose prices fluctuate according to the silver bullion price. The most important factor when evaluating the prospects of a silver mining company are to determine how much silver that companies mines have in the ground. What is their proven silver reserve? Obviously, before investing in any stock it is imperative to do your due diligence. Only look at companies that publish information about their silver reserves, silver resources, and silver exploration potential. Some market watchers estimate that only about 600 million ounces of silver are mined annually, but the worldwide silver market consumes around 900 million ounces for use in industry, jewelry manufacturing, and coin production. If this is true, then the basic market laws of supply and demand must come into play and the price of silver has to rise accordingly. Counteracting this is the silver mines willingness to mine their reserves. If the silver price per ounce is at $6.00 and it costs the mining company $4.00 per ounce to mine the silver their is less incentive to get that silver out of the ground than there is when the silver price rises into the mid to high teens. As this occurs and more silver is mined at a profit, then one could expect that the annual production amount of silver will meet the demand and eventually surpass it. Silver is considered a commodity and the markets will usually reflect the prices based on current and future demand for the commodity of silver. |
